Important Job Search Tips for Nurses

If you are a nurse looking for your first job or a new opportunity, you may wonder, “Where should I begin?” Here are five tips to help you tackle your employment search.

  1. Define Your Ideal Position
    Unlike many other professions, nurses work in a diverse range of environments. You may find yourself in a large hospital, an individual physician’s office or a long-term care facility. Your first step is to identify the best job for you. Would you like to work with certain patients? What setting would you prefer? Other areas to consider include the physical demands of a position, the educational requirements and available shifts. If you aren’t sure what you want or if you lack the necessary experience, look for jobs that can serve as stepping stones on your career path.
  2. Set Up Job Alerts
    Most job boards and job search engines can send you an email when an employer posts a position matching your requirements. You can set up these alerts within your account. Alerts provide two key benefits. First, you don’t have to visit the job board every day; technology does the work for you. Second, you know about new openings within minutes, so you can submit your application ahead of the competition.
  3. Customize Your Resume
    Sending out the same resume to every employer is a classic job search mistake. Don’t do this. Today, many companies use ATS or Application Tracking System software to quickly sort through applications before a human even sees them. And, what are ATSs scanning for? Keywords pulled directly from the job description. A good strategy is to start with a standard resume. Then for each application, read the entire job description and highlight keywords, key phrases, requirements and skills. Finally, rework your resume to match the position as closely as possible.
  4. Use Your Network
    For companies, hiring is risky. A person could give a great interview and then turn out to be a bad employee. If you know someone within an organization, however, you become a safer choice. That person can vouch for your work ethic and your reliability. In addition, letting friends, family and acquaintances know about your job search often leads to unexpected opportunities. You never know who might know someone who looking for a great nurse.
  5. Partner With Your Local Staffing Agency
    Employment firms have direct connections with area hospitals and medical facilities. They may be able to place you more quickly and efficiently (and find a better fit) than if you were job hunting on your own. And, if you are still discovering what type of work best fits your needs, staffing agencies provide a variety of temporary and trial-to-hire programs. This is a wonderful way to try out different situations before making a long-term commitment.
