Arguably the best-trained manpower in the country, members of the US military come to the civilian workforce with marketable skills, discipline, and experience. Finding a job or a career outside the military will be less a result of a well-built resume (although that is certainly important), and more a matter of how well you can interview, engage your co-workers, and mesh within an organization.

Luckily, there are several tools available for veterans seeking employment and entering the civilian job market. The Veterans Affairs office, for example, has several online tools available to military personnel for the transition to civilian life and livelihoods.

  • If you are wondering how your current military position could translate into a civilian career, this military skills translator tool will help.
  • On top of the other resume tips we have offered in our Aventure blog, job seekers with a military background could get additional help from this military resume builder tool.
  • Not sure what your next step should be? This Interest Profiler can help you narrow down your options.

Military personnel who are leaving military service will find that their skills and experience translate well to many civilian jobs. In particular, skills in information technology (computer science, database administrators, programmers), civil service (law enforcement, fire departments, private security), and education prove to be highly aligned with previous military experience.
