Follow These 6 Tips to Maintain a Healthy Work-Life Balance

Are you always working? Have you forgotten what free time is? If so, you may need to reassess your work-life balance. Use these tips to put things back in order.

Keep Your Phone Out of Sight When Working

According to a recent study, “having your phone nearby — even if it’s not buzzing or ringing, and even if the power is off — can hurt your performance.” Many of us unconsciously and automatically check our cellphones as often as every 18 minutes. This constant distraction can negatively impact both our professional and personal lives. Experts recommend keeping your phone out of view until you need to use it.

Step Away from Email

Frequently checking your email is another time drain. It can interrupt your concentration and prevent you from achieving periods of high productivity or flow. Rather than instantly responding to every message, turn off notifications and set aside a few times each day (during working hours) to respond to messages.

Pay Attention to Productivity

People tend to focus on how long they work, instead of on how efficient they are. Ultimately, this strategy can backfire. Research shows, “output falls sharply after a 50-hour workweek.” Set a personal goal to work smarter, not harder. Prioritize tasks, give yourself time limits and avoid time-wasting activities such as compulsively checking your phone and email.

Outsource and Automate

You may leave a long week on the job only to find yourself bombarded by cleaning, laundry, errands and food preparation on the weekends. Look for ways to make the life part of work-life balance easier too. Would it be worth it for you to hire a lawn or housekeeping service? If you are on a budget, are there tasks you can set and forget like automatic bill payments and weekly grocery deliveries?

Block Out Personal Time

You may not be able to leave work at work 100 percent of the time. However, make it a point to set aside non-negotiable “me time” every day and week. This may be a 30-minute daily workout, 20 minutes to read before bed or a one-hour coffee break with friends every Sunday morning. These activities may seem too time consuming at first. But, once you lock them into your schedule, both you and your company will benefit from their rejuvenating effects.

Find a Job You Love

Work-life balance isn’t only about hours. If you work 40 hours for 40 years, you’ll clock 83,200 hours or almost 10 years of your life. That’s lots of time on the job, so it’s in your best interest to enjoy what you do. Although few us ever land the perfect job (and everyone has bad days), try to discover meaningful and fulfilling employment rather than just a way to earn a paycheck.
