Don’t Just Wait Around for The Job Offer, Follow Up!

Whether it’s your first job interview or your hundredth, you likely can’t help but give a sigh of relief once it’s done. After all, a job interview is so stressful, and now you can just sit back and relax…right? Well, not quite. It’s true, the hardest part is definitely over, and you can feel good about that. But your work is not quite done. Rather than sitting around and hoping for a job offer, you can increase your odds of getting hired by following up after a job interview. Don’t worry, though; following up is easy, if you know how to do it!

Easy as 1-2-3 and A-B-C

The best way to follow up after a job interview is with a timely thank-you note. This can be done either via email or a handwritten note (depending on whether the company is more traditional or modern). The rules of sending a thank-you note are as easy as 1-2-3:

  • Send the note no more than one day after the interview
  • Always double-check your grammar and spelling to make sure it is error-free
  • Keep it short, no more than three paragraphs

As for what to write, that’s simple too, as simple as A-B-C:

  • Start by mentioning your appreciation for the opportunity
  • Then, build on the interview by reiterating something specific you talked about
  • Finally, reaffirm your continued interest in the job

Sample Thank You Note

Dear Mr. X,

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for meeting with me this morning. I really appreciated your informative answers to my questions about the position of Office Assistant.

I was especially pleased to hear you mention your desire to find someone with solid technical skills, since this is one of my strong suits. In my current position, I have helped transition the office inventory system to a digital platform, and have assisted in training employees on the new software.

After speaking with you today, I am more eager than ever to work with XYZ & Co. You mentioned that your goal is to have a hiring decision by the end of next week; I hope to hear from you then, but please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you in the meantime.

Boost Your Odds!

It only takes a few minutes, but sending a thank-you note after an interview can boost your chances of getting the job. In one survey, 75 percent of hiring managers say that a thank-you note affects their decision (source: Business News Daily). And in another survey, 30 percent of hiring managers said that no follow-up note means they will not even consider the applicant (source: Fortune). So don’t just sit back and wait after an interview; follow up, and increase your odds of landing the job!
