Considering Relocation For a Job? Ask These Questions First!

It’s an attractive job offer…but it would require you to relocate. What do you do? This is a difficult decision for most people because there are so many things to consider. Before you pick up and move your whole life, there are questions you should think about.

Questions About the New City

Depending on how far you are relocating, you could be looking at a very drastic change in culture, climate and cost of living. Consider these questions about the city where the job is located:

  • Will my significant other be able to find work?
  • Will we be able to make friends easily?
  • Will I enjoy the local weather?
  • What is there to do for fun?
  • Will my kids have a good school to go to?

Questions About the New Job

Even if the job sounds perfect, take time to think it through. When you pick up and move for a job, you don’t want to find out you hate it after a month. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What is the company culture like? Will I fit in?
  • Is this job a real step forward for my career?
  • How long do I envision myself staying at this job?
  • Do I see a future for myself at this company?

Questions About Money

Of course, there is always the question of money. Often when people relocate for a job, the main lure is a higher salary. But be sure to consider a few other questions to make sure it is really worth the move.

  • Who will pay for relocation? How much will it cost?
  • What benefits does the new job offer? Are they better than my current job?
  • What is the cost of living in the new city? Will the increase in salary match the increase in cost of living?
  • Do I have the funds needed to rent or buy a new home?

Relocation can be an exciting and beneficial change. But it can also be a disaster, if you don’t take the time to consider all the factors first. Asking yourself questions is the key to making the right decision.
