Getting the Most Out of Working with an Employment Agency

Using a staffing service to find a job can give you an edge over the competition, but you must take advantage of the opportunity. Use these five tips to make your employment search more successful.

  1. Choose the Right Staffing Service 
    First, to ensure you are treated fairly, find an agency associated with the American Staffing Association (ASA). Next, decide which staffing company is right for you. Firms serve different geographical areas and various industries. For example, if you want to work as a nurse in South Dakota, look for an agency that specializes in medical placements in the Midwest. Finally, beware of recruiters who ask you to pay a fee. Reputable services charge businesses, not job seekers.
  2. Know Your Best-Case Scenario
    You may not know exactly what type of job you want; nevertheless, try to be as specific as possible. An “any job will do” attitude makes it difficult for a recruiter to find the right position for you. Before you begin the process, answer the following questions: Are you looking for part-time, full-time, temporary or contract work? How much money would you like to make? What types of jobs would you consider/not consider? Would you prefer to work for a large, mid-sized or small company? What are your goals … to gain experience in a certain field, to find a permanent placement, or to try out different jobs to see which one you like best?
  3. Be Professional
    After you contact an agency, the staffing coordinator will most likely want to meet with you in person. Treat this like a real job interview. Arrive on time, dress appropriately and have your materials organized and ready to go. Since employment agencies only receive payment after a company hires you, recruiters are looking for top-quality candidates.
  4. Act on Advice
    If you’ve spent hours on your resume, you may feel frustrated when you’re told to change something (or everything). Don’t take corrections personally. Staffing professionals aren’t trying to criticize you, they are trying to help you. Recruiters work in the hiring business day in and day out, and they know what they are talking about. Even if you disagree, consider their suggestions anyway. Sometimes minor changes can make the difference between landing a job versus sitting at home.
  5. Stay in Touch
    To keep the process moving along, be responsive. Reply to emails and phone calls as quickly as possible. If several days have passed and you haven’t heard anything, check in. When a recruiter remembers how eager you are, they may be able to find you a job faster. However, if despite your best efforts nothing seems to be happening, consider moving on to another agency. Unfortunately, some staffing firms aren’t upfront when they don’t have open positions, and you want to be working not waiting.
