Cherokee

As the county seat of Cherokee County, the city of Cherokee, Iowa has a population of over 5,000, but don’t let its size fool you – from a rich arts & music scene to a large list of outdoor activities, Cherokee has something for everyone!

Positioned on the Little Sioux River, the city of Cherokee had a story-worthy start.  The promise of new railroad brought many new citizens & businesses to town, speculating on where the railroad would cross the river.  However, when the railroad was finally complete in 1870, it crossed the river about a mile and a half south, forcing the citizens & businesses to “drag” their homes, shops & even the county courthouse to the newly built rail depot.

Today, the City of Cherokee takes pride in its parks, which house over 40 camp sites and the impressive Bacon Aquatic Center, as well as 2 disc golf courses, a 9-hole golf course and a fantastic trail system throughout town.  Outdoor lovers will enjoy the over 1,000 acres of land dedicated to parks in Cherokee County, with activities such as hiking, canoeing, camping, fishing & horseback riding.

Not only does Cherokee boast loads of recreational opportunities, it’s also rich in culture & history, with Cherokee’s Main Street being designated as a “Cultural District” by the State of Iowa in 2004.
