8 Ways to Reenter the Workforce Prepared and Worry Free!

We’ve heard the saying a lot: We are living in unprecedented times. Since most of the general population has not seen a global pandemic as serious as the COVID-19, with business closures and lay-offs, the world may seem a little scary right now. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Soon businesses will reopen, people will go back to work, and life will go back to some sort of normalcy. While you’re stuck at home, here are a few ways you can prepare to reenter the workforce worry-free!

Update your Resume

How long has it been since you’ve applied for a job? Whether you have been actively applying, or are considering to start the search for a new career, now is the perfect time to update your resume. Take a look at resume trends to ensure yours is up to par with your competition. In 2020, you’re going to want to swap your resume objective for a summary statement. Also, let’s get back to basics: keep your resume simple and skip the fancy, outdated graphics!

Update your LinkedIn profile

Having an awesome LinkedIn profile is essential for modern professionals. With other cool social media apps, like TikTok or Snapchat, LinkedIn may seem a little, well, boring. But the more time you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it. Connect with colleagues you may have forgotten to send an invite to over the last year and find new industry connections. Review your profile for typos, add any newly obtained skills and make an insanely good summary. And don’t be afraid to get a little personal! Share content that relates to your profession or industry, or even publish your own content.

Make some new connections

There used to be an old rule about LinkedIn: Don’t invite connections you don’t know in real life. Well, that has changed a bit. LinkedIn has become a great way to connect with professionals in your industry that you may not know, but can still learn and be inspired by. Instagram is another great social media outlet to network with like-minded professionals, but on a personal level. All it takes is one, “Hello,” to strike up a conversation that could lead to a world of possibilities. At the end of this, maybe you can grab a coffee IRL with a new friend!

Clean up your social accounts

Before you start making new connections and adding them to personal accounts, like your Facebook, you may want to clean things up a little. Did you know that 37 percent of employers use social media to screen candidates? Furthermore, 34 percent of hiring managers said information on a person’s social profile kept them from hiring the candidate. While you may think your memes are hilarious, an employer may find them offensive and could cost you a really good opportunity. Make sure your shared content is clean, avoid the use of swear words, or anything else that may make you seem less professional than you really are. If you wouldn’t say it at Thanksgiving family dinner, then don’t post it.

Research and Practice Interview Questions

If it’s been a while since you have had an interview, you may want to review common questions  that will be asked. It’s important to brush up on skills you may not have used recently, to ensure you will be set for success! You can even google common interview questions for your profession to really hone in on where you may be lacking knowledge.

Deepen or learn a new skill set

Now is a great time to increase your knowledge and understanding within an area of your industry and update it on LinkedIn! This will show employers you are serious about your career and are always open to learning something new. There are a lot of companies offering free online learning courses, so you have plenty of options! For example, Coursera offers courses in a multitude of fields, from data science to arts & humanities. Coursera allows you to narrow your search and hone in on a specific topic by filtering for your skills, job title, and level of experience.

Set new goals

In your downtime, setting goals, both personal and professional, can help you to stay motivated in the upcoming weeks. Not only is it a source of motivation, but it helps to provide focus and accountability, something you may be lacking in your time away from work. Write your goals down or start a vision board, and set benchmarks. Place your goal sheet or vision board somewhere you will see it often, like your fridge, so you can be reminded often. Don’t forget to set a reward for when you achieve each goal!

Apply for jobs

Even though non-essential businesses are shut down, you may be surprised at the number of places hiring. While some hiring employers may hold of on in-person interviews, you can still be an early applicant! Apply for ev-er-y-thing that meets your criteria and don’t be afraid to apply for positions above your skill-level. While you may not meet every qualification for every job, you can discuss how your skills are transferable and how your experiences make you a good fit in your cover letter. Also, don’t be afraid of rejection! More often than not, you will be turned down for more positions than you are offered, and that’s okay! It doesn’t mean you’re a poor candidate, it just means it isn’t the right job for you. When one door closes another opens! Now that businesses are preparing to reopen to the community, there will be a lot of open doors in the upcoming weeks.
