This is How Managers Inspire Their Employees

As a manager, you want your employees to be productive and engaged, but sometimes, even the best of us need a little help. Here’s how to add extra inspiration to your workplace.

Start With Why

In one of the most popular TED Talks of all time, Simon Sinek “explains why some organizations and some leaders are able to inspire where others aren’t.” Sinek illustrates his concept of the golden circle – What? How? and Why? Most companies begin with the outer ring or the What? They make cars, or they are a law firm. However, Sinek argues the most successful enterprises work from the inside out. They start with Why? “Why does your organization exist? Why do you get out of the bed in the morning? And why should anyone care?” To truly inspire your team, give the job meaning and show your employees how they are contributing to something bigger than themselves.

Provide Clarity

Even if your company has awe-inspiring goals, your employees can’t work toward these objectives if they don’t know what they are. In his book, The Culture Code, Daniel Coyle noticed that rather than sending one big signal, successful organizations sent a handful of steady, ultra-clear signals aligned with a shared goal. These signals “are found not within big speeches so much as within everyday moments when people can sense the message: This is why we work; this is what we are aiming for.”

Create Psychological Safety

At some point, most of us have been on a fantastic team – a team where everybody clicked. Unfortunately, most of us have experienced the opposite too – a team that, despite the talents of the individual members, couldn’t get anything done. Obviously, the first type of team is far more inspirational. And did you know managers can set the tone for their teams by modeling the right behaviors? According to Charles Duhigg in his book, Smarter, Faster, Better, “Leaders should not interrupt teammates during conversations … They should demonstrate they are listening by summarizing what people say after they said it. They should admit what they don’t know. They shouldn’t end a meeting until all team members have spoken at least once … They should call out intergroup conflicts and resolve them through open discussion.” All these behaviors lead to psychological safety which is an essential ingredient for effective teams.
