How Not To Get Your Dream Job

When you are in the thick of a job search, it is sometimes hard to see the dream jobs from the pyramid schemes. A good rule of thumb is the old adage, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”

Here’s how to tell if the job you are interested in isn’t going to be your dream job.

  • If the job description seeks “highly motivated self-starters”.
  • If it promises a ridiculous salary, usually a nice even figure (because they only deal in cash).
  • If it pays on 100% commission
  • If you find yourself asking more questions of the interviewer than he or she does of you.
  • If a careful investigation of the company online and otherwise has few or no actual results. Next step, Google “Name of Company” and “scam” and see if that works better.
  • If you can’t find the business on the Better Business Bureau or the Federal Trade Commission websites.
  • If they ask you to buy-in to the company.

Don’t get us wrong, we are all about grassroots marketing, taking chances, and putting yourself out there. But know what you’re getting yourself into. And if you’re going to work your way up the ladder, make sure you know where you’re climbing.
