Corporate holiday parties can be a great way for companies to wind down at the end of the year, toast successes, and launch new goals for the coming quarters. They can also be an excellent way to make a fool out of yourself in front of co-workers and management. Here’s how to make the most of your corporate holiday shindig and still be able to show your face on Monday.

Be yourself. Your professional, nicely dressed, mostly clear-headed self.

DO remember you are an established professional who has worked hard for your professional image.

DON’T let too many drinks or inappropriate attire distract from who you are as a person and as a professional employee who wants to be taken seriously at the next meeting. Remember that, while it’s a social holiday function, it’s still a corporate holiday function.

Network the room.

DO mingle. Holiday parties are a great way to introduce yourself to upper management and other departments in a more casual atmosphere. Keep in mind #1 and #2, and you’ll be in good shape for these in-house networking opportunities.

DON’T just hang out with co-workers and people you know. Holiday events are ways for companies to remove boundaries and mix up the social commentary. Use it to your advantage and take this opportunity to put some faces with the names you see in your inbox.

Always be prepared.

DON’T forget to check the invitation. If significant others are not invited, it’s better to know that before checking your coat if you want to avoid an awkward ride home. If they are welcome, make sure to include them in the conversation (and use them as a reminder to avoid “talking shop” too much).

DO prepare yourself in the event you are complimented or toasted in front of an audience. Be gracious and make sure you thank both the person who provided you with the good tidings as well as the people who coordinated the event (it’s an otherwise thankless job—they’ll appreciate the nod). 

Be on time and happy to be there.

DON’T skip the holiday party or sneak in before it closes down. Respect the hard work that went into planning the event and the opportunities that undoubtedly await you when you attend. You may think your presence won’t be noticed, but your absence definitely will.

DO commit to having a good time (keeping in mind all of the above).
